Li-Chun Su Piano
Li-Chun Su is a German-Taiwanese pianist.
At the age of three, she first caught her parents’ attention when, without any formal musical training, she began reproducing melodies she had heard on her grandparents’ piano. Recognizing her exceptional talent, she was awarded a government scholarship a few years later to support her advanced musical education.
After completing her studies in Taipei, she moved to Europe to explore the origins of the music she had long admired. In Berlin, she encountered an atmosphere shaped by open-minded and fearless musicians. That same year, she successfully passed the entrance examination and made the innovative city of Berlin the centre of her artistic life.
Berlin’s central location in Europe gave Li-Chun Su the opportunity to work with renowned figures in European music, including pianists Gábor Páska, Paul Badura-Skoda, Malcolm Bilson, László Simon and Alicia de Larrocha, harpsichordist Mitzi Meyerson, singer Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, and musicologist Prof. Dr. Helmut Fladt.
These encounters encouraged her to question her own artistic position and to explore the original sound worlds of composers, particularly through the study of historical instruments. Her aim was to gain a deeper understanding of the original character of compositions and the interpretative possibilities shaped by the instruments and musical practices of their time.
This approach also led her to consider composers’ works as part of a broader artistic whole rather than treating individual pieces in isolation.
What began as an inner artistic journey eventually led her to concert halls throughout Europe, where she has presented extensive cycle programmes, including J. S. Bach’s The Well-Tempered Clavier and Goldberg Variations, Chopin’s complete 21 Nocturnes and four Ballades, Debussy’s Images, as well as piano concertos performed both on modern concert grands and original historical keyboard instruments.
