Yang Song


Yang Song is a composer, researcher, and educator whose work explores the intersections of contemporary composition, electronic music, multimedia, and cross-cultural musical perspectives. She holds a PhD in Composition from the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and subsequently conducted postdoctoral research there. She continued her studies at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg, where she completed the Konzertexamen in Composition, and at IRCAM in Paris, where she completed the Cursus Program in Composition and Computer Music.


Her artistic practice combines instrumental and electronic composition with computer-aided compositional methods, sound analysis, spatialization, motion sensors, live video, and multimedia performance. She has received commissions from institutions, orchestras, and ensembles including IRCAM, Ensemble intercontemporain, Deutsche Radio Philharmonie, the Shanghai International Arts Festival, Percussions de Strasbourg, and United Instruments of Lucilin. Her works have been performed by leading orchestras and ensembles including the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Deutsche Radio Philharmonie, Ensemble intercontemporain, Ensemble Modern, Percussions de Strasbourg, Ensemble recherche, Arditti Quartet, and Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart.


Her distinctions include the International Goethe Prize at the 2017 Asian Composers Showcase in Tongyeong, South Korea , and the 2018 Théodore Gouvy Prize for her orchestral work. She has also received funding from Musikfonds and the Deutscher Musikrat through the NEUSTART KULTUR program in 2022. In 2024, she was awarded a residency fellowship at the Deutsches Studienzentrum in Venedig, supported by the Beauftragte der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien.


Alongside her artistic and research activities, Song has extensive experience teaching composition and music theory. Her teaching focuses on connecting artistic practice with technological exploration and encouraging students to develop their own creative language across instrumental, electronic, and multimedia contexts.
